"AI chatbot" gets thrown around as a feature to check off, and that's exactly how it ends up useless — bolted onto a site with no real job to do. The better question isn't "should I have one," it's "what's currently costing me time or business that AI could actually fix."
Where AI Genuinely Earns Its Keep
- Answering the same questions on repeat. If your team fields the same three or four questions every day by phone or DM, a chatbot trained on your business handles those instantly, any hour.
- Enquiries that go cold overnight. A lead that messages at 9pm and doesn't hear back until the next afternoon has often already messaged a competitor. Instant replies close that gap.
- Booking without phone tag. Letting customers book straight from your site or chatbot removes a step that otherwise depends on someone being available to answer the phone.
- Repetitive admin. Review requests, appointment reminders and follow-up sequences are exactly the kind of task worth automating.
Where It's Just A Gimmick
If your enquiry volume is low, your questions are highly varied and case-by-case, or a chatbot would just be a worse version of a simple contact form — skip it. AI should replace a real bottleneck, not decorate a homepage. We'd rather tell a client not to bother than sell them something that won't move the needle.
How To Decide
Look at where enquiries are actually lost today: unanswered messages, slow replies, missed calls outside business hours. If that list is short or empty, a chatbot won't add much. If it's long, even a simple one usually pays for itself within the first few bookings it saves.
